What is LED Light Therapy and How Can it Benefit Skin?

LED light therapy is surging in popularity both inside and outside the treatment room. This game-changing technology harnesses the power of multi-spectrum light to target a range of skin concerns from acne to anti-aging, and can even support with skin healing, all at the press of a button.

In-office LED treatments are the gold standard of light therapy, using more powerful and effective devices than homecare devices. Depending on what you’re looking to treat, your aesthetician or dermatologist will work with you on an LED protocol to meet your goals.

For at-home use, LED face-masks and other LED hand-held devices like our LED Spot Treatment Device are also highly beneficial to target specific concerns and for daily skin maintenance.

"Our LED Spot Treatment Device is a quick and easy hand-held device to help boost your skin-clearing routine," explains Anna De La Cruz, Glo's VP of Product.

"Helping to resolve stubborn breakouts, reduce post-blemish marks, and maintain a balanced complexion, just three minutes a day can make all the difference to your skin’s health and clarity."

How LED Light Therapy Works

LED light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light, such as blue, red, and near-infrared, to penetrate the skin at various depths.

First developed for clinical use by NASA in the ‘90s to help heal astronauts’ skin conditions, research on the efficacy of LED light therapy continues to grow, supporting the many benefits it can have as part of a consistent skincare routine.

"Each wavelength targets different skin concerns, so depending on what you’re looking to treat, you’ll want to find an LED device to suit your specific skin goals," adds Anna.

Red and blue light are the most commonly used LED lights for LED light therapy.

Red LED Light Therapy

Red LED light therapy stimulates collagen production and reduces inflammation, making it highly popular for use in anti-aging skincare routines. It’s also used as an in-office add-on to laser or microneedling treatments to improve skin recovery and reduce redness.

Blue LED Light Therapy

Blue LED light therapy targets acne-causing bacteria, reduces oil production, and protects skin against future breakouts. It's popular for those with acne or breakout-prone skin.

Yellow LED Light Therapy

Also known as amber LED light, it targets lymphatic flow and circulation, improving skin detoxification.

Green LED light therapy is the least studied wavelength and has little data supporting its efficacy. As a short wavelength, it's thought that it may not penetrate deep enough into the dermis to create any significant benefits in reducing hyperpigmentation or calming skin, although future studies may prove otherwise.

Key Benefits of LED Light Therapy

Kills Acne-Causing Bacteria

Blue light is renowned for its antimicrobial properties, effectively targeting and eliminating acne-causing bacteria. This makes it ideal for reducing active breakouts and preventing future blemishes.

Reduces Redness and Inflammation

Red light wavelengths help calm irritated skin by reducing inflammation and redness, improving the appearance of active acne and soothing sensitive areas.

Regulates Oil Production

Overactive oil glands can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. LED light therapy helps balance sebum production, leaving your skin less shiny and less prone to acne.

Accelerates Skin Healing

Near-infrared light penetrates deeper into the skin, boosting collagen production and speeding up the healing process for scars, hyperpigmentation, and other post-acne marks.

Enhances Skincare Absorption

Prepping your skin with LED therapy can improve the absorption of your favorite serums and moisturizers, enhancing their effectiveness.

LED Light Therapy For Breakouts + Clearer Skin

Designed to target and clear breakouts by killing acne-causing bacteria, our LED Spot Treatment Device is a must-add to your skincare routine if you’re looking to balance and clarify your skin.

Using a combination of red + blue light: red 630 nm | blue 415 nm, it combines the best of both wavelengths to both treat and heal breakouts and inflammation.

Regulating oil production, it minimizes shine, and helps clear pores from acne-causing debris. Targeting post-blemish marks, it reduces inflammation and activates skin’s natural healing mechanisms, helping to promote clearer, healthier skin.

How to Add LED Light Therapy to Your Routine

Most at-home LED devices can be used daily—but always follow your device’s recommended usage guidance.

"You can use the LED Spot Treatment Device up to twice daily. Cleanse your skin with your favorite cleanser—for balancing we love Purifying Gel Cleanser, then gently dry your skin," shares Anna. "Hold the device over the affected area for three minutes. Then follow with your favorite serum, moisturizer, and SPF for daytime."

Can I use LED Devices While Pregnant?

While LED light therapy is generally considered a safe, non-invasive treatment, if you’re pregnant and considering use of an LED device or treatment, always seek guidance and advice from your healthcare provider.
