Say Goodbye to Plastic Microbeads
Starting in July 2018, less than two years from now, the US will ban the production of personal care products and cosmetics containing plastic microbeads. Glo Skin Beauty is not waiting to take action.
Microbeads are defined in the US law as any solid plastic particle less than 5mm in size and intended to be used to exfoliate or cleanse, and eventually end up in our waterways. Certain species of marine life including whales mistake the plastic beads for food.
In the European Union, there is not yet any law banning microbeads and a number of large manufacturers are contesting action to ban them. Large companies in the US have said that they will not make changes in their formulations until the end of 2017 at best, and other manufacturers lag in making changes to their formulations.
More than a year ago Glo Skin Beauty initiated action to remove plastic microbeads. In the US, it is estimated that more than eight trillion microbeads enter US aquatic habitats each day! We move to end the use of Polyethylene Beads and protect our water quality, wildlife and other resources.
Glo Skin Beauty has removed microbeads from four formulations: Clear Acne Cleanser, Brightening Polish, Daily Polishing Cleanser and Refresh Facial Polish.
- Daily Polishing Cleanser and Brightening Polish feature a combination of Jojoba Beads made from natural wax that dissolve after use as well as Celluloscrub, a renewable and biodegradable modified cellulose from wood pulp.
- Refresh Facial Polish features Diatomaceous Earth, a natural fossilized algae with high silica content that gently exfoliates, along with Jojoba Beads.
- Clear Acne Cleanser features Synthetic Wax Beads that dissolve after use for gentle exfoliation without irritating the skin.
