Why You Need Plant Stem Cells For Your Skin

When we talk about innovative, plant-based ingredients that make a visible impact on your skin, we’re usually referring to plant stem cells. Plant stem cells are such an important and game-changing ingredient for your skin, you’ll find it across our product lineup. "With the power of plant stem cell technology, phyto ingredients harness nature's regenerative properties, making them reparative, anti-aging essentials for your skin," explains Glo's VP of Product Development, Anna De La Cruz.

What Are Plant Stem Cells?

If you’ve never heard of plant stem cells or had no idea that they were the star ingredients in our Phyto-Active collection, you can probably agree that plants are pretty resilient beings. They’re able to grow in some of the harshest conditions and have the capability to regenerate cells for all parts—roots, leaves, flower, from the same stem cells. Human and animal stem cells, on the other hand, are only capable of regenerating cells for that specific tissue type.

What Are the Benefits of Plant Stem Cells For Skin?

Although their ability to regenerate cells is part of what makes them so powerful, this is actually not what occurs on your skin, nor is it the reason we choose to include them in our formulas. The plant stem cells included in skincare formulas are not live cells and cannot regenerate human stem cells. Instead, they provide a high concentration of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, which helps defend against sun damage and aging. How high of a concentration, you may ask? Some plant stem cells contain a concentration of antioxidants 1,000 times greater than other forms of plant extracts.

Plant stem cell benefits to the skin include anti-aging, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties,” explains Dr. Nina Desai, board-certified dermatologist.

In addition to their added antioxidants, plant stem cells are also highly pure and uncontaminated and contribute very little environmental impact. Plant stem cells really are the evolution and modernization of plant botanicals.

While plant stem cells are mainly used in anti-aging skincare products, their benefits can extend beyond that and can even help improve hydration, tone, and skin texture.

Plant Stem Cells in Skincare

Let’s take a look at our curated list of top plant stem cells, their purpose and where you can find them:

Citrustem™

Find it in Phyto-Active Firming Mask

Found in oranges, this plant stem cell reorganizes the dermis, or inner structure of the skin, resulting in a firmer complexion. In this reorganization, Citrustem™ is capable of recovering your skin’s elasticity from up to 12 years prior. And who wouldn’t want to restore their skin from over a decade ago?

Resistem™

Find it in Phyto-Active Conditioning Oil Drops

Coming from the heart-leaf globe daisy, Resistem™ helps build an impressive defense against aging. In a clinical study, volunteers experienced a 52% increase in radiance, 9% increase in clarity, 13% decrease in redness, and 9% decrease in shine after 60 days of use.

Papyrus Leaf

Find it in HA-Revive Hyaluronic Mist

Responsible for replenishing critical moisture within the epidermis, or top layer of the skin. Clinical studies found a 33% increase in water retention capabilities 30 minutes after application. But what does this mean for you? Less surface dehydration.

Sweet Iris

Find it in HA-Revive Hyaluronic Drops

Sweet iris is special because it acts on both the epidermis and dermis. In the epidermis, it regenerates skin by increasing the differentiation of cells to make skin act younger. In the dermis, it stimulates the synthesis of extracellular matrix components while limiting the action of the enzymes that destroy them. As a result, the two layers become firmer and denser. In addition, it's is an effective moisture regulator that binds moisture to the skin.

Nopal Cactus

Find it in in HA-Revive Hyaluronic Hydrator

This might be the jack-of-all-trades when it comes to plant stem cells. Nopal cactus fights inflammation, treats wounds, protects cellular DNA and increases skin’s tolerance to the sun. It’s also rich in antioxidants including vitamin C, polyphenols, and catechins (also found in green tea extract). With continued use, skin becomes smoother, toned and more hydrated.

Buddleja Davidii

Find it in Phyto-Active Eye Serum

Originating from Europe and Eastern Asia, the Buddleja plant offers anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, in their stem cell form, Buddleja Davidii provides immediate and high protection against photoaging, which is the premature aging of skin from exposure to UVA rays.

While we love to recommend plant stem cell-infused products all day long, if you have acne-prone or sensitive skin, or are under 26 years old, you may want to hold off and use more targeted treatments.
